Off Shore Fishing
Marco Island
Offshore is
starting to heat up with the summer almost upon us and the fish are
really getting into the warm water and the season of plenty!.
The Permit have shown up and are really thick on structure anywhere
from the beach out to anywhere there is structure. I got a
report of a huge school at the T tower and the three or four boats
there caught their limit even after many break offs on the huge legs
of the communications tower. Speaking of the towers, may
people that live on Marco Island have know idea that there are
several of these towers out there in the Gulf of Mexico, and they
are all hot spots at one time of the year. The towers I
believe were put in by the DEA in an effort to help combat drug trafficking,
and I really do not know if they are used for that purpose
today. I do know that the towers are placed starting at the
Florida Keys, and run North along the cost. The closest one to
Marco is about 20 miles from our shores. The towers hold lots
of snapper, cobia, grouper and many other species at one time or
another. So, if you are looking for something different to
fish near, give one of the towers a shot.
Backwater has
been on fire with snook being caught in the outer mangrove
passes. Some up to 20 lbs have been reported near the Port of
the Islands area. Anglers are using live bait such as pinfish
and mullet soaked on the bottom to catch the big boys. Redfish
and trout are doing fine at this time with many trout out on the
flats South of Marco. Redfish, hit or miss in the backwater,
but reports of the big bull reds on the near shore reefs are
starting to be reported. The weather is great so enjoy it
while we can before the afternoon thunderstorms begin their daily
march across the Everglades to reach us by the end of the day.
